Bike, Lounge, Splash: How OKRA Designs Urban Spaces To Connect With Nature

Calling all architects, landscape architects and interior designers: Architizer's A+Awards allows firms of all sizes to showcase their practice and vie for the title of “World’s Best Architecture Firm.” Start an A+Firm Award Application today.

What if cities could flourish as natural habitats where ecology and urban life coexist? This is a central question for OKRA, a landscape architecture firm based in the Netherlands. Established in 1994 by Hans Oerlemans, Martin Knuijt, Christ-Jan van Rooij, and Boudewijn Almekinders, the firm now includes landscape architects, urban planners, and designers from 14 different nationalities. Thorough research and a focus on craftsmanship, OKRA has become known for their resilient designs.

Central to OKRA’s philosophy is the creation of meaningful, livable spaces that connect to nature. The firm thinks of cities as natural habitats, places where urban and natural ecosystems coexist in harmony. This year, they are the Popular Choice Winner for Best Landscape Design Firm in Architizer’s A+Awards. This recognition underscores their commitment to water management, a crucial consideration in the Netherlands. The following projects showcase this idea through their “Living with Water” approach, developing water strategies that protect urban environments while preserving natural resources. Combining interdisciplinary collaboration and a focus on systems, OKRA continues to explore how we connect with nature.

Catharijnesingel

Utrecht, Netherlands

Once a neglected urban highway, the Catharijnesingel in Utrecht has been transformed into a vibrant green space and restored canal, reconnecting the city with its historical roots. This 20-year project revitalized the area, turning it into a pedestrian-friendly landscape that blends old and new, while addressing climate adaptation. The redesign prioritizes green spaces, biodiversity, and slow transportation modes, creating a park that enhances walkability and offers recreational opportunities. Catharijnesingel’s restoration has become a model for urban renewal, earning accolades for its innovative blend of history, ecology, and public space.

Marina Park

Cork, Ireland

Marina Park in Cork transforms a former industrial area into a vibrant urban park, fulfilling the city’s vision for a regional green space. Designed on a complex brownfield site, the park integrates Cork’s industrial heritage with modern needs, managing stormwater runoff and adapting to rising sea levels. The first phase includes multifunctional spaces, a renovated Gaelic sports stadium, and a pavilion repurposed from old showgrounds. With Phase 2 underway, the park will extend further, blending urban and natural elements, offering diverse recreation zones, and preserving historic structures, contributing to Cork’s Docklands regeneration and enhancing biodiversity.

Cadzand Maritime

Cadzand, Netherlands

In the seaside resort of Cadzand-Bad, coastal reinforcement was integrated into a public space upgrade, creating a safe, year-round destination for residents and tourists. Ecological dune widening enhanced biodiversity and erosion control while offering scenic routes for cyclists and pedestrians. The new marina, formed by strengthening breakwaters, provides a unique experience for visitors. At the heart of the redesign is a central maritime balcony that connects the dunes, boulevard, and marina, offering views and gathering spaces. The project not only improved safety and ecology but also boosted the local economy by creating a vibrant, year-round community.

Katwijk Coastal Defense

Katwijk, Netherlands

For the past decade, the Rijkswaterstaat and Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment have strengthened weak coastal areas while ensuring Katwijk remains a thriving tourist destination. OKRA’s design, developed through an interactive process, emphasized preserving the town’s connection to the beach. By constructing a dyke-in-dune system—where a stone embankment is reinforced and hidden by dunes—the project minimized disruption and allowed for the addition of an underground parking garage. Natural-looking dunes and paths now connect the village to the sea, with a central dune transition serving as a welcoming event space for the community.

Rotterdam Westerkade

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Not long ago, the quays of Rotterdam were neglected spaces used for parking and leftover activities. However, a new vision for a connected city transformed these areas into vibrant, green public spaces. The Westerkade and Parkkade quays were redesigned to balance leisure and traffic, creating flexible spaces for relaxation and events. With tree-lined paths, seating, and lush plantings designed by Piet Oudolf, these quays now serve as inviting recreational areas along the Maas River. The transformation revitalized Rotterdam’s riverfront, strengthening the city’s connection to the water and becoming a key feature of its public spaces.

Cutty Sark Gardens

London, United Kingdom

Cutty Sark Gardens, inspired by the ebb and flow of tides, blends a garden and public square to create a dynamic, inviting space in the heart of Greenwich. As part of the Mayor’s Great Spaces initiative, the area was revitalized ahead of the 2012 Olympics, transforming a neglected transfer space into a lively square that honors the site’s naval history and proximity to the Thames. With flexible design elements and green terraces overlooking the river, Cutty Sark Gardens serves as a link in London’s vision for a green, connected urban environment.

Interpretation Center of Biodiversity and Pile Dwellings in the Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park

By Atelje Ostan Pavlin, Lubljana, Slovenia

Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Cultural Building, 12th Annual A+Awards

Atelje Ostan Pavlin’s latest project is a remarkable asset to the Slovenian capital. Built in the Ljubljana Marshes, an area of outstanding natural beauty and home to prehistoric pile dwellings, the new Interpretation Center tells the area’s geological and evolutionary story, fauna and flora alike, and gives visitors a front row seat for the latest chapter in the story of local wildlife. It’s a living museum that complements rather than imposes on its location.

Amazon HQ2 at Metropolitan Park

By ZGF Architects, Arlington, Virginia

Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Commercial Building, 12th Annual A+Awards

The world’s largest new LEED Platinum v4 construction project when ground was broken, Amazon’s second Virginia HQ sets enviable green building standards; 100% renewable electricity, highly efficient HVAC, and daylighting to cut energy use by 24%. The community garden, children’s play area, protected bike lanes and ground level opportunities cement this development as part of a wider urban environment and community. As did a lengthy consultation with the public on what masterplans should include.

Manshausen – Two Towers

By Snorre Stinessen Architecture, Steigen, Norway

Jury Winner, Architecture +Environment; Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Hospitality Building; 12th Annual A+Awards

`Merging tradition and modernity, the Two Towers of the Manshausen Island Resort occupy what was once a large coal storage facility that supported the local fishing industry. Burnt wood cladding nods to this former life, making the structures stand out through a ‘negative space’ effect. The material choice reflects the history of place and people, while energy independence nods to our net zero future, bringing state-of-the-art technology into a unspoilt natural setting without visual or physical disruption.

Where the Pollinators Are

By Didier Design Studio, Pennsylvania

Jury Winner, Sustainable Landscape/Planning Project, 12th Annual A+Awards

Bees and other pollinators are in rapid decline, making any project that tries to restore local ecosystems back to their natural balance incredibly important. Rethinking an area that was once dominated by monoculture, introducing species that co-habit and support one another, Where the Pollinators Are reflects our increasing understanding that biodiversity must be fundamental to development. Spanning 3.5 acres, the site emulates Pennsylvania’s ridges and valleys, and the conditions for life to thrive.

CUCADELLUM – Funicular to the Tibidabo Amusement Park

By MIAS ARCHITECTS, Barcelona, Spain

Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Transportation Project, 11th Annual A+Awards

The upgrade to Barcelona’s Tibidabo Amusement Park funicular railway has significantly modernised the all-electric service. Passenger capacity more than doubled, from 120 to 252 seats, journey times have been brought down to just three minutes at maximum speed, and the number of trips per hour has increased as a result. Meanwhile, upgraded vehicle stock emphasises this transit mode as a ‘ride’ in itself, maximizing panoramic views and delivering local facts and information via touch screens.

Echo TU Delft

By UNStudio, Delft, Netherlands

Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Cultural/Institutional Building, 11th Annual A+Awards

We last looked at Echo TU Delft in our feature on 7 Examples of Radically Resilient and Adaptable Architecture. Now here we are again, praising this university building for its ability to transform, develop, and change with the needs of its student population over time. This essentially means it can be updated without ecologically-costly and potentially very wasteful construction work taking place, which is the definition of future-proofing.

Corrugated Cardboard-Formed Exhibition Space

By LUO Studio, Shanghai, China

Popular Choice Winner, Sustainable Interior Project, 11th Annual A+Awards

LUO Studio makes a big statement about material choice with its appropriately-titled Corrugated Cardboard-Formed Exhibition Space. Highly flexible, the design offers a model for temporary exhibition spaces with significantly reduced transportation and construction needs, two of the largest contributors to carbon footprints. Once events are finished, it’s possible to pack down, relocate and reuse the lightweight exhibition space at another site, reducing the impact of a sector which has historically been notorious for its reliance on single-use materials.

25 Best Architecture and Design Firms in Los Angeles

These annual rankings were last updated on October 10, 2024. Want to see your firm on next year’s list? Continue reading for more on how you can improve your studio’s ranking.

Los Angeles is arguably regarded as the capital of the film and television industry. The sprawling city is the epicenter of theatricality and luxury of the Western world. The cinematic scenery, the countless studio setups as well as the historic movie palaces have all imbued the cultural identity of Los Angeles with the ‘cinematic flare’, and architecture is no exception.

Home to iconic landmarks such as Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall and Richard Meier’s Getty Center, Los Angeles’ architecture has become greatly influenced by the entertainment industry. Starting from its architectural schools, the city promotes alternative design practices. For instance, founded in 1972, SCI-Arch is one of the most notable, experimental architecture schools in the world. It combines state-of-the-art technologies with the reimagining of architecture as a design practice and world-building, not only in commercial buildings but also in intricately designed residences. A pole of attraction for many celebrities, Los Angeles homes can easily be considered settings from out of this world.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Los Angeles based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

How are these architecture firms ranked?

The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firm’s level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firm’s ranking, in order of priority:

  • The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2024)
  • The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2024)
  • The number of projects selected as “Project of the Day” (2009 to 2024)
  • The number of projects selected as “Featured Project” (2009 to 2024)
  • The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2024)

Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Los Angeles architecture firms throughout the year.

Without further ado, here are the 25 best architecture firms in Los Angeles:

Since 1985, we have enjoyed continued success creating architecture inspired by the people who work, live and play in our environments. During every phase of a project we ask ourselves these five questions:

>  Have we listened deeply to our clients?
>  Have we drawn from our breadth of experience?
>  Have we distilled the design to its most simple, appropriate form?
>  Have our plans and systems provided clarity and peace of mind for our clients?
>  Are we exceeding expectations?

We believe it is our commitment to achieving a resounding ‘yes’ to each of these questions which has generated Whipple Russell’s long list of diverse and satisfied clients.

We believe that the process of design, and the building that results from that process, must have purpose. With each new project we seek to identify this purpose and develop the design around it. This incremental process we use to develop a building must be simple and lucid and expressed in every element of the final product and we strive to maintain a clear design thread from beginning to end of a project. Expressing a building’s logic is a key part of our process and is achieved with an open collaborative approach with all building consultants.

Structuring Nature: The Architectural Pursuit of Ecological Complexity

Architizer's 13th A+Awards features a suite of sustainability-focused categories that recognizing designers that are building a green industry — and a better future. Start your entry to receive global recognition for your work!

What is the difference between making a landscape and making a building? When architects are undertaking the task of designing a building, according to a recent exhibition at MIT Wiesner Student Art Gallery, they often estimate that its typical lifespan will be between 50 to 60 years. On the other hand, a (human-made) landscape is supposed to “last forever.” In other words, nature has excessively raised the bar when it comes to a landscape’s longevity, challenging architects to find ways of creating artificial mountains, wetlands, parks, forests etc., that are effectively integrated within the existing context, operate efficiently through carefully designed infrastructure systems and require as little maintenance as possible.

Through this series of projects, one key observation arises: architecturally designed landscapes are made of a completely different set of materials. From water and soil to silkworms and fish and even urban ruins, an artificial landscape is often materialized through reappropriation and reuse. In addition, the infrastructure necessary for maintaining these landscapes is often preexisting, thus guiding architects to base their design’s efficiency on already tested maintenance practices. Still, the most crucial point is the “ambition” hidden behind those projects, where architects are not looking at landscapes as a temporal endeavor but rather focus on cultural and historical significance, resilient strategies and the intention to make something that will last forever.

A Waterfront Homestead Reborn: Restorative Design in the Yangtze Delta Polders

By Shanghai Landscape Architecture Design and Research Institute, Shanghai, China

Jury Winner, Sustainable Landscape / Planning Project, 11th Annual A+Awards

02_01_A Waterfront Homestead Reborn.jpg

The polder of the Jiangnan region is a farmland development created through long-term agricultural water treatment and management efforts, irregularly constructing an ecosystem made of berms, waterways and sluice weirs that explores the balance between food production, storm water and flood regulation. The aim of the project was to revive the Jiangnan polder, integrating both artificial and natural elements to blend production, life and ecology. Through the construction of individual polders and cofferdams in-between, along with the farmland’s purification and the integration of mulberry, silkworm and fish as core elements, the new landscape was transformed into an interactive water-land ecosystem.

Ravine Park: Godrej Rivergreens

By Studio POD, Pune, India

02_Ravine Park

The Ravine Park is a landscape urbanism project in India, aiming at creating ecologically sensitive developments. More specifically, the park uses the materialised landscape as an infrastructure to manage water on site, while maintaining the ravine ecology and the existing watersheds and trees. In fact, the fabricated landscape is constructed with locally available stones, native species and steel structures that barely influence the ravine’s ecology.

Moakley Park Resilience Plan

By Stoss Landscape Urbanism, Boston, Massachusetts

The Moakley Park Resilience Plan essentially transforms a single-use recreational facility into a multi-faceted, modern 21st century park, in an attempt to address the city’s climate resilience, community health and welfare issues. The project’s strategy tackles varying sea levels, stormwater management, biodiversity and the heat-island effect. It also reconnects Moakley with its adjacent urban and natural landscapes and constructs an artificial as well as ecologically diverse park that protects the city from coastal flooding.

HEITO 1909

By ECG International Landscape consultants, Taiwan

Popular Choice Winner, Public Park, 10th Annual A+Awards

02_HEITO 1909

The project transformed Taiwan’s historical sugar factory – a former environmentally polluted site due to sugar production waste – into a public park that is stitched within the city’s urban fabric. The design strategy behind the park’s realisation was the utilisation of already existing ruins and their adaptive reuse in order to construct a new reimagined landscape. Five waste-water basins as well as the main structure’s foundation are recovered and reappropriated, paying tribute to Taiwan’s somewhat lost landscape.

Olympic Aquatics Stadium of the Île-de-France Region

By Auer Weber, Route de Torcy, Vaires-sur-Marne, France

02_Olympic Aquatics Stadium

The Olympic Aquatic Centre is a project realised for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in France and is now Europe’s biggest whitewater centre. The most impressive aspect of the project’s design is integrating it into the existing historic landscape, through a process of reinterpretation and reinvention. A series of small, artificial islands break up the endless amounts of water present on site, while the buildings almost “emerge” from the new landscape structure.

Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre

By Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Athens, Greece

Although this project is considered primarily a building, it actually attempts to recreate an artificial hill, thus restoring the Athens’s relationship with the landscape and the sea. The SNFCC’s sloping roof is a park, Mediterranean garden and “hill” that acts as a green pocket within the city’s urban fabric. The buildings’ infrastructure is impressive, being able to water and preserve the plants and dense vegetation by using solar panels and operating in an almost completely self-sufficient way.

25 Best Architecture and Design Firms in Turkey

Ottoman mosques next to grand buildings dating back to the Byzantine Empire along with bustling local markets showcase a remarkable blend of ancient traditions and modern sensibilities within Turkey’s urban fabric. In the later part of the 20th century, following a period of great upheaval in Turkish society as well as various political movements and economic crises, contemporary architectural practices needed to evolve to keep up with their changing developments. More specifically, the country expanded its global trades, highly influencing the local construction industry and placing emphasis on, materiality, sustainability and urban regeneration strategies.

Projects from renowned architects such as Zaha Hadid’s Kartal Masterplan in 2006 as well as Emre Arolat’s many architectural designs have contributed to the country’s skyline and elevated its architectural scene. As a result, present-day architects have transformed Turkish architecture into an amalgamation of its cultural dictionary coupled with less rigid and flexible designs that reflect the country’s diversity and modern identity.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Turkey based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Turkey architecture firms throughout the year.

Zemberek Design, a team mainly works on interior projects, is conservative about, starting a design process by “finding the right question” is the key element, that reveals the basic and simplest idea, leading to conclusion. This initial and most time-consuming phase of the design process evolves with dialogs and exchanging of ideas between the members of Zemberek Design Team.

Occasionally, constraints of existing building, project requirement, hierarchy of functions or decisions on circulation becomes the main idea of design, in addition to consider the space perception of the user. “The right question” that needs to be answered in the final project are taken into the consideration in its simplest form. Simple architectural solutions as answer to basic demands of the space make the user perceive the initial question. By the perception of space that is prioritized at the beginning of the process, initiation of an involvement process for the user in which the user is able to read and understand the cause-effect relations, is aimed. This approach renders the user-designer relation cyclical.

As he continues to push the boundaries of what small-scale firms can achieve, Centerfield Studio’s future is grounded in design for modern life.

Summit Residence

Lake Oswego, Oregon

This 7,775 square foot (722 square meters) cliffside residence in Lake Oswego is designed to maximize lake views and harmoniously blend indoor and outdoor spaces. The single-family project also includes converting an existing garage into an ADU, building a new boathouse, and creating hardscape designs across a 52,000 square foot site. Sustainable features such as advanced thermal insulation, green roofs, solar panels, radiant flooring and large cantilevered eaves are integrated to enhance energy efficiency and comfort.

Burnt Tree Farm

Sherwood, Oregon

Centerfield Studio remodeled and expanded one of William Fletcher’s last residential projects, a 1989 mid-century home that had fallen into disrepair. Drawing inspiration from the 20-acre vineyard and sweeping views of the Cascade Mountain Range, the design revitalized Fletcher’s post-and-beam structure to enhance indoor-outdoor living. A 520 square feet (48 square meter) addition was seamlessly integrated, while deteriorating covered outdoor areas were restored or reimagined to strengthen spatial connections. Locally sourced materials like Douglas Fir siding, board-formed concrete, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows highlight the natural surroundings and flood the home with daylight.

Cameo Court

Lake Oswego, Oregon

This 4,500 square foot (418 square meter) home, set on a half-acre lot, blends the client’s vision for traditional charm with contemporary architecture. Designed around a private central courtyard, the house pushes to the lot’s edges, creating a sense of privacy. Three distinct wings — the Primary Suite, Central Gathering Space, and Kid’s Wing — extend into the landscape, fostering a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Large windows and this integrated landscaping further enhance the home’s connection with its natural surroundings.

Fernwood

Portland, Oregon

This 2,800 square foot (260 square meter) mid-century modern remodel marks Centerfield Studio’s first co-development with Woolly Mammoth Ventures. The project aims to breathe new life into stunning yet overlooked properties, blending original charm with contemporary energy for a fresh, modern revival. Featuring clean lines, expansive windows and updated materials, the design honors the mid-century aesthetic while enhancing functionality. This partnership signals the studio’s commitment to preserving architectural heritage while embracing forward-thinking design.

Amber Place

Portland, Oregon

This 3,600 square foot (335 square meter) remodel blends the owner’s vision of “Zen and Pop,” creating a harmonious space that balances tranquility with vibrant, modern elements. The design merges calming minimalist features with specific accents to deliver a unique living environment. Natural materials and serene tones evoke a sense of peace, while playful pops of color and texture add energy. The result is a thoughtful fusion of relaxation and creativity, perfectly tailored to the owner’s style.

Cardinal Residence

Lake Oswego, Oregon

This 3,500 square foot (325 square meter) remodel is designed to offer flexibility for the evolving needs of a large family. The project encompassed architecture, interior design, and landscape design, creating a cohesive and adaptable space that grows with the family. Features include versatile living areas and innovative storage solutions, ensuring functionality for every stage of family life. The design extends out to the landscape, establishing space for outdoor living and providing a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

100 Best Architecture and Design Firms in China

From the CCTV Headquarters by OMA in Beijing to myriad projects by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) across the country, China’s recent urban boom has made the country a magnetic scene for international architectural practices. Indeed, mass urbanization and rapid industrial development have been crucial ingredients in China’s rise as an economic superpower in the twenty-first century. Now, the dynamism of the country’s internal architectural scene is going global, and the world is turning its attention to innovative designs by local Chinese firms.

From poetic examples of adaptive reuse, thoughtful examinations of how the past comes to bear on the present, to high-tech transportation design, Chinese architects and firms are blurring boundaries between “tradition” and “modern” and, in so doing, reclaiming local architectural flavor in the era of global practice. For many outsides of China, the Pritzker Prize-winner Wang Shu may be an entry point into thinking about China’s New Modernism. However, with so many new studios regularly proving themselves with breathtaking projects, the question is not where to start but where to stop.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in China based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of China architecture firms throughout the year.

Without further ado, here are the 100 best architecture firms in China:

Our office’s name in Chinese is “?/?”. The first character means rest, while the second signifies farming. When put together, the phrase means allowing land to become fallow in order to restore its fertility.

In this impetuous era where many are focused on rising to the top and chasing achievements, pressure and temptation coexist. We, like other practitioners within our industry, are encumbered by the times. But when we look back on our experience, we understand that the most important thing is still the joy of design, the mission we have chosen as architects, and our desire to remain sensitive to the world around us. “?/?” reminds us to slow down: fallow is a crucial part of farming so we can use the time to lay the foundations for our best work.

Our professional areas of expertise encompass cultural and public projects such as art galleries, libraries, museums and hotels. We propose design solutions for different spaces, while studying the creative uses of the space. We believe that architecture is not limited to a physical structure that merely satisfies functions, but it is also a container of space that users interact closely with —a combined experience formed by light, shadow, sound, color and details, where rationality and spirituality coexist.

TAO (TRACE ARCHITECTURE OFFICE) was founded by Li Hua in 2009 in Beijing. It is a design studio committed to architecture, urban, landscape and furniture design. Trace is surviving mark of things, and evidence of  time fragments accumulation. The production of architecture is a process with confrontation of various will powers and values, full of contradiction and complexity. Architecture itself is a record of its time and nature. Looking at “trace and process” suggests our approach to architecture. TAO is concerned with the social, cultural and ecological significance in making process of architecture from design to construction; While architecture always face the conflict between past, present and future, between regional and global, between individual and collective, TAO rejects a simple and brutal attitude and explores how to achieve a subtle balance.

The Smile

London, United Kingdom

“The Smile,” a landmark project for the 2016 London Design Festival, was a pavilion made entirely from cross-laminated American tulipwood. Designed as a curved timber tube cantilevered in both directions, it allowed visitors to walk through its length, rising toward light and offering unique views of London. The structure, prefabricated in Germany with the largest tulipwood panels ever produced, featured perforated walls to filter sunlight. At night, it became a glowing lantern. The Smile attracted 30,000 visitors and 290 million online views, celebrated for its inventive use of material and groundbreaking engineering.

One Ashley Road

London, United Kingdom

One Ashley Road, a landmark project for Related Argent, serves as the gateway to the Heart of Hale redevelopment in Tottenham Hale. The project features two residential towers housing 183 units, retail spaces, and office incubators, along with communal roof gardens and a new public square. The design draws inspiration from the area’s industrial heritage, particularly the Berol House, using a distinct faceted form and orange brick exterior to reference the Berol Eagle Pencil. Its stepped massing accommodates the unique site conditions posed by two underground tunnels, creating green terraces and secluded communal spaces for residents.

Newhall Be

Harlow, United Kingdom

This 84-unit project for Linden Homes completes the South Chase of Phase 1 of the award-winning Newhall development in Harlow. Alison Brooks Architects designed the scheme using prefabricated timber construction and a highly efficient plan, drawing inspiration from the simple materials and roof forms of rural Essex. The project features a variety of housing types, including apartments, villas, courtyard houses and terraced homes, with 26% designated as affordable housing. The design maximizes space and flexibility, incorporating elements like roof terraces, loft spaces and home offices to accommodate modern living and future adaptability.

Exeter College Cohen Quad

Oxford, United Kingdom

The Cohen Quad reimagines the traditional Oxford quadrangle by blending student housing with teaching spaces in landscaped courtyards. The expansion for Exeter College includes 90 student rooms, lecture halls, seminar spaces, a café, and fellows’ accommodations. The S-shaped design connects two courtyards through cloisters, staircases, and garden paths, while the central commons area serves as the social hub. The Quad’s distinctive curved roof houses loft study spaces and, along with its stone-clad base and stainless steel façade, creates a striking addition to Oxford’s skyline.

Mesh House

London, United Kingdom

The Mesh House is a new family home in London’s Hampstead Conservation Area tailored to the informal lifestyles of a family of five. The site, located in Belsize Park, presented challenges with its sloping, wedge-shaped form and proximity to neighboring buildings, requiring careful 3D modeling to maintain daylight and harmonize with the streetscape. Inspired by the surrounding Victorian villas and Arts and Crafts houses, the design features faceted planes unifying façade, roof and walls. A central courtyard opens to the south, creating fluid connections between indoor spaces and three gardens, while vertical spaces and glazed apertures flood the home with light. A winding steel and timber staircase serves as a key architectural element, reflecting the house’s dynamic geometry.

Lens House

London, United Kingdom

Lens House transforms a five-story 19th-century villa in north London into a light-filled, modern home for a client in photography and design. The project restores the derelict house and introduces bold interventions, including large trapezoidal openings that frame views of a 300-year-old walnut tree and draw light throughout the day. A low single-story volume wraps around the house to create a home office and roof terrace, while a second tapered volume extends the living room. The design’s folded geometries and seamless surfaces create a weightless, origami-like aesthetic, while carefully positioned apertures funnel light into the interior and connect the home to its surroundings.

Better With Age: 5 Projects Positioning Patina as a Dominant Design Detail

Architects: Want to have your project featured? Showcase your work through Architizer and sign up for our inspirational newsletters.

There is no desperation in building decay, no sadness in the natural process of aging — only a quiet, knowing elegance, creating a place that can abandon any vanity of youth and instead lean fully into the grace that only time can bestow.

A limestone balustrade, once a gleaming marvel, softened by decades of caresses—each hand that has passed over it leaving an indelible mark. A copper dome, once a brazen beacon in its youth, now wearing a dignified cloak of verdigris. Cracks in lime plaster have spread like fine spider silk, delicate yet determined, each line beginning to record the countless seasons that have come and gone.

Patina is the result of interaction — with nature, humanity and time. It happens through processes such as moisture interacting with minerals, oxidation in the air, or the gradual build-up of natural materials like moss or algae. Patina doesn’t happen overnight; it’s a slow, organic process determined by the unique conditions of a building’s environment— rain, wind, pollution, sunlight — all leaving their mark in subtle and unpredictable ways.

Rather than masking the effects of aging, patina enhances character, adding texture and depth to a surface. For architecture, patina brings warmth, richness and a sense of history to a building, making it feel lived-in and connected to its surroundings. It also acts as a form of natural preservation, protecting any underlying materials from further decay. The following A+Award-winning projects cherish and celebrate the authenticity patina brings and serve as a reminder that perfection lies not in pristine surfaces but in the graceful acceptance of change and age.

Liminal House

By McLeod Bovell Modern Houses, West Vancouver, Canada

Jury and Popular Choice Winner, Residential Interiors (>3000 sq ft), 12th Annual A+Awards

Photographs by Hufton and Crow

Liminal House’s concrete surfaces react subtly to their coastal environment. Salt carried by the strong ocean breezes will pit the surface, while carbonation — a process where carbon dioxide in the air interacts with calcium hydroxide in the material — will give the concrete a denser, more resilient finish. Over time, the once grey façade will shift to earthier hues as rain leaves mineral streaks that slowly soften its color, allowing the family home to blend better with the rugged shoreline. Surprisingly the evolving patina actually helps to protect the structure, reducing porosity while visually anchoring it to the landscape.

River Bend Residence

By Lake|Flato Architects, New Braunfels, Texas

Popular Choice Winner, Private House (M 2000 – 4000 sq ft), 12th Annual A+Awards

Photograph by Casey Dunn

Around the façade of River Bend Residence, Lake|Flato Architects used weathered Corten steel that will continue to oxidize with exposure to the elements. Not only a visually interesting design choice, the pre-rusted surface, a result of oxidation, has a stable layer that will protect the underlying metal as it deepens in tone thanks to the moisture in the surrounding air. Inside, a use of Douglas fir allows for more evolution as the golden timber shifts to a silvery-grey over time. Together, these materials will age naturally, allowing the building to mature comfortably in its dense woodland environment while helping it to withstand the pressures of time.

Madrone Ridge

By Field Architecture, Sonoma County, California

Jury Winner, Private House (L 4000 – 6000 sq ft), 12th Annual A+Awards

Copper cladding at Madrone Ridge offers a striking example of how the correct material choice can allow a building to synchronize with its environment. Initially bright and reflective, over time, the copper will begin to oxidize on contact with the air, creating a protective patina that shifts from coppery tones to deep greens and browns. This natural aging process shields the metal from further corrosion and will result in the home becoming integrated more comfortably into the surrounding valley.

Casa Lohr

By Veinte Diezz Arquitectos, Mérida, Mexico

Jury and Popular Choice Winner, Residential Renovations and Additions, 12th Annual A+Awards

Photographs by Manolo R. Solis

At Casa Lohr, the exposed plasterwork reveals the structure’s colonial origins. The rough texture, left intentionally unfinished, allows the passage of time to play a visible role in the building’s aesthetic. Cracks and weathering expose layers of stone and brick beneath, with each imperfection marking the history of the structure. As the plaster continues to age, the façade will gradually soften, embracing the rawness of its materials and creating an ongoing dialogue between the architecture and the forces that shape it.

Murka Hotel (Phase II)

By Thinking Design, Wenzhou, China

Popular Choice Winner, Hotels and Resorts, 12th Annual A+Awards

Thinking Design’s use of local stone and reclaimed timber at Murka Hotel initially helps the building blend with the natural landscape. Its raw texture and color palette pay homage to the traditional culture of the area. However, it is the use of biophilia here that will drastically alter the south-facing hotel’s appearance over time. As the stone weathers, its surface will darken and roughen, and the abundant plant life will grow on and around it. The wild grass-covered roofs will grow into the valley, allowing the buildings to be increasingly absorbed into its environment becoming a living habitat.
