Mountain Masterpiece: KA Designworks’ Visionary Home Wins “Best in Show” in LaCantina Competition

What does it take to design a home that fully embraces its breathtaking natural surroundings while maintaining the comforts of modern living?

This question defines the ethos behind Cortina 10, the recipient of the Best in Show Award in the 2024 Best of LaCantina competition. Nestled in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, Cortina 10 by KA Designworks exemplifies how architecture can transcend mere shelter to become an experience — one that is inseparably tied to its environment.

This ski-in/ski-out residence not only offers access to the trails of Telluride Ski Resort but also maximizes views and airflow, capturing the essence of the mountains through a seamless indoor-outdoor design facilitated by LaCantina’s folding doors.

Perched on a steep lot surrounded by multiple 14,000-foot peaks, Cortina 10 leverages its unique position by embracing the topography and orienting the residence to highlight panoramic views. Entering the home is itself an experience in spatial design. Guests are invited through a glass aperture that frames the surrounding forest, immediately guiding their gaze upwards via a floating staircase with white oak treads and metal railings.

This staircase leads to the great room, the home’s centerpiece, where the architects have designed a viewing podium overlooking the space. This multi-functional living room, flooded with natural light and wrapped in glass, offers a nearly 180-degree vantage point over the mountainous landscape, making the interior feel like an extension of the outdoors.

In such a setting, the transition from indoor to outdoor living becomes essential to the design. LaCantina bifold doors, measuring 14 feet wide and floor-to-ceiling in height, open the great room entirely onto an expansive deck, seamlessly merging the two spaces. This wraparound deck, equipped with comfortable seating, a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, and a hot tub, acts as an elevated viewing platform, inviting residents and guests to savor the mountain air in all seasons.

“LaCantina’s remarkable ability to open entire walls allows us to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting the beauty of nature right into the heart of the home,” the KA Designworks team explains. This approach allows Cortina 10 to blur the line between architecture and landscape, offering an immersive experience where interior spaces flow effortlessly into the environment.

KA Designworks’ design approach was about more than creating an appealing aesthetic; it was about elevating the experiential qualities of the space as well. In mountain environments where the terrain drops away from the site, creating an environment that feels connected to its surroundings can be challenging. “Cortina 10 is perched on a steep lot, where the landscape feels distant and the connection to nature is limited,” says the architectural team. “In such a setting, transforming decks into vibrant outdoor living spaces becomes essential to the design ethos.”

By integrating LaCantina’s folding doors, the architects ensured that outdoor areas could become true extensions of the home, accessible and usable regardless of the season. The doors, which open the main living area along multiple bays, enable fresh air and sunlight to pour in during the warmer months while closing securely to maintain thermal comfort in winter.

KA Designworks’ selection of LaCantina doors went beyond functionality; it was also a choice driven by craftsmanship. The doors’ minimal threshold profile creates a seamless transition that enhances the feeling of connection to the outdoors.

The folding doors fit snugly within a standard 2×6 wall, which not only streamlines the structure but also maintains clean, consistent exterior wall detailing. This level of precision, according to the architects, “ensured a consistent and polished exterior wall detailing that enhanced the home’s visual appeal.”

LaCantina’s doors are also engineered to support the home’s energy efficiency. “These doors excel in thermal performance too,” the architects emphasize. “We were able to bask in those breathtaking views without compromising on energy efficiency or overall building performance.”

In a climate that demands durability and performance, the thermally-broken frames of the doors provide excellent insulation, preventing heat loss in winter while still allowing for expansive glass that maximizes views. This feature was critical to the success of Cortina 10, as it allowed the designers to prioritize both style and sustainability.

On the lower level, the integration of LaCantina doors continues to support the home’s connection to the landscape. A large family and game room opens onto a second deck that is directly adjacent to the ski trails, providing easy access to the slopes while offering an informal gathering space.

This level also includes a ski locker area, a bunk room, and two en-suite bedrooms, each designed to offer guests an immediate connection to the outdoors. By utilizing LaCantina’s customizable door systems, KA Designworks created openings that not only fit the specific needs of the space but also maintain a cohesive aesthetic throughout the residence.

Ultimately, Cortina 10 stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and high-quality materials. “It’s not just about creating a space; it’s about crafting an experience that celebrates the interplay between architecture and nature,” says the design team.

The integration of LaCantina doors transformed this home from a structure nestled in the mountains to a dynamic living experience that invites the outdoors in. As occupants move gracefully between spaces, they experience “a fluid connection to nature that transforms everyday living,” making Cortina 10 an exemplary winner of the 2024 Best of LaCantina competition.

Nestled in the breathtaking San Juan Mountains of Colorado, Cortina 10 is a ski-in/ski-out residence that harmonizes luxurious indoor living with the rugged beauty of its surroundings. The home’s open design invites guests to take in nearly 180-degree views of the landscape through vast glass elements that allow natural light to flood the interior. Key to this design are the folding doors by LaCantina, which open up the great room to an expansive deck equipped with seating, a fire-pit, outdoor kitchen and hot tub.

KA Designworks praised LaCantina for their ability to “open entire walls,” transforming decks into vibrant outdoor living spaces. These folding doors blur the line between indoors and outdoors, allowing residents to enjoy the beauty of the mountains without leaving the comfort of the home. “It’s not just about creating a space; it’s about crafting an experience that celebrates the interplay between architecture and nature,” the firm explained.

In addition to enhancing the home’s visual appeal, LaCantina’s folding doors excel in thermal performance, ensuring that the home remains energy efficient despite its large glass openings. “We were able to bask in those breathtaking views without compromising on energy efficiency or overall building performance,” says the firm, underscoring the perfect balance of style and function that LaCantina brings to this remarkable mountain residence.

Most Innovative & Best Compact Project: Portage Bay Float Home by Studio DIAA, Seattle, Washington

The Portage Bay Float Home, a 650-square-foot floating residence on Seattle’s Lake Union, exemplifies how thoughtful design can expand small spaces. This high-craft home uses LaCantina doors — including dual inswing kitchen doors, multislide doors for the living room and sliding pocket doors for the bedrooms — to create a fluid connection between the interior and the surrounding deck. These carefully chosen elements allow the home to gather and reflect light, fostering a sense of spaciousness and making the outdoor deck feel like an integral part of the living area.

Studio DIAA emphasized their design philosophy, saying: “We chose LaCantina doors as a key element of our design [because they] facilitate an uninterrupted connection between the indoors and outdoors.” They explained that LaCantina doors “played a pivotal role in redefining the spatial dynamics of the home,” by “allowing us to expand the living area beyond its physical confines” and creating a harmonious flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. This intentional design approach dissolved traditional boundaries, making the deck feel like an extension of the home’s total square footage.

Best Urban Residential Project: Modern Mediterranean by BBA Architects, Chicago, Illinois
Collaborators: Bigane Construction, Dawn Reeves Interior Design

The Modern Mediterranean home blends classic Mediterranean architecture with a modern twist, creating a bright and airy space that maximizes its double lot in the city. The design strategically places floor-to-ceiling windows and generous openings to bring in natural light while maintaining privacy. One of the key features is a custom LaCantina servery window which BBA Architects explains “functions as a pocketing window, opening completely to the covered terrace as the panels stack and tuck into the wall,” transforming the kitchen into a seamless indoor-outdoor space.

BBA Architects highlighted how the LaCantina doors seamlessly connect the interior to the exterior. This thoughtful design creates an ideal space for entertaining, with the firm noting that the bi-parting door “allows for a continuous entertaining space between the kitchen and back terrace,” blending style and function to enhance the overall experience of the home.

Best Suburban Residential Project: The Trailblazer by Citizen.Design, Renton, Washington

Situated on an 18-acre wooded site in Maple Valley, Washington, the Trailblazer is a contemporary home that smoothly blends with the natural landscape. The house is composed of four rotated gabled volumes, connected by light-filled breezeways that invite nature into the circulation spaces. At the heart of the design, a 20-foot-wide by 10-foot-tall LaCantina sliding door connects the main living room and the family room to an outdoor living area, offering expansive views of the nearby creek and creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

The architecture firm chose LaCantina for its contemporary look and praised the doors’ “thin stiles and rails and the flush stacking feature,” which were key factors in specifying the system. The doors helped overcome the challenge of creating a large opening, and the firm noted that they were able to “utilize a nearly flush sill between the interior concrete floors and the exterior concrete patio,” ensuring a subtle transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a home that flows naturally, with LaCantina doors enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the design.

Best Rural Residential: Little House/Big Shed by David Van Galen Architecture, Langley, Washington
Contractor: Jade Craftsman Builders; Supplier: Island Sash and Door, Inc.

Set within a second-growth forest, Little House/Big Shed is a tranquil retreat designed to blend harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The home’s connection to the landscape is enhanced through thoughtful siting, large expanses of glass, and the use of LaCantina folding doors, which open the interior to the surrounding fir trees. These doors provide access to a spacious deck, creating a continuous relationship between internal and external living spaces.

The architects noted that the doors “played a significant role in the primary goal of the project: to insert the house as seamlessly as possible into the ecology of the site.” The expansive scale of the doors and their ease of use were key to achieving the design’s success, allowing the home to intimately connect with the forest while maintaining a sense of openness and light.

Best Commercial Project: Ponzi Vineyards – Laurelwood Event Space by Fogelstrom Design Build Co., Sherwood, Oregon

This carefully detailed addition to the Ponzi Vineyards Tasting Room was designed to create delicately subtle transitions between the interior event space and the private outdoor terraces overlooking the vineyards. Central to this design are the LaCantina bi-parting multislide doors, which span an impressive 10-foot by 20-foot opening from floor to ceiling. These large glass doors allow visitors to experience uninterrupted views of the vineyard while enjoying the event space indoors.

The architecture firm highlighted the doors’ “perfectly clean detailing” and how they “allow the space to gracefully flow to the outside terrace and to the surrounding landscape.” They noted that, when stacked, “it’s as though there are only two doors instead of four,” creating a sleek, unobstructed connection to the outdoors.

Best Renovation Project: Bel Air by Matic Design and Build, Santa Barbara, California

The redevelopment of this Bel Air residence nimbly merges indoor and outdoor living through the use of custom LaCantina folding doors. Spanning 14, 12, and 10 feet respectively, these floor-to-ceiling doors open up the home to expansive views of the surrounding landscape. By connecting the main living areas and bedrooms to outdoor terraces, the LaCantina doors create a natural flow between the interior and exterior spaces, offering a luxurious, open feel.

Matic Design and Build emphasized how the doors’ custom sizes and 84-inch height were crucial to achieving the desired effect, as they needed something beyond the standard 80 inches. The firm also noted how the doors integrate flawlessly into the wood interior frames, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional performance. The result is a home that feels effortlessly connected to its stunning outdoor surroundings.

Best Unbuilt/Planned Concept: Desert Pearl Residence by Flynn Architecture & Design, Phoenix, Arizona

Rendering by Flynn A&D/Matt Flynn

Rendering by Flynn A&D/Matt Flynn

The Desert Pearl Residence, set against desert mountains, was designed for an artist and astronomer, with LaCantina’s thermally-controlled folding and sliding doors central to the design. The living-kitchen space features six bays of three-panel folding doors that open fully to the mountains to the south and the shaded courtyard to the north, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

The architecture firm explained that the thermally-broken aluminum frames were “key to making the main living space of the house a success,” providing essential protection from the Arizona heat. The open doors “allow free movement between mountains, water, food, and shade,” pulling the center of the home outdoors during cooler months. Matching aluminum frames throughout ensured a cohesive, streamlined look.

These projects demonstrate the versatility and impact of LaCantina’s products in creating beautiful, functional spaces that connect seamlessly with their surroundings. Each of the 2024 winners has used LaCantina doors and windows to redefine how their buildings engage with the outdoors, offering spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and inviting.

Modern Harmony: Studio MM’s Mission to Bring Architecture and Nature Together

What happens when architecture is designed not just to sit within a landscape but to truly engage with it?

For Studio MM Architect, the answer lies in meticulous attention to setting, materials and craft. Led by Marica McKeel, the firm creates spaces that not only harmonize with their surroundings but elevate the experience of living in them. From cliffside homes with sweeping views to tranquil retreats nestled in nature, Studio MM designs with the environment and the client in mind, always considering how the smallest details can make the largest impact.

Two recent residential projects — Kaat Cliffs and Tranquil Abiding — perfectly illustrate this approach. By responding directly to their respective sites and the needs of their inhabitants, both homes use expansive glazing to forge a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Central to these projects are Marvin Ultimate windows, which play an essential role in merging McKeel’s architectural vision with the performance demands of the client.

For Kaat Cliffs, a narrow, steeply sloped site framed by a dramatic cliff on one side and a drop-off on the other challenged McKeel and her team to create a design that could bridge these two contrasting landscapes. The solution was a light-filled, open-plan living area featuring panoramic windows that seamlessly connect the indoors with the breathtaking surroundings.

“Our primary goal with Kaat Cliffs was to create an efficient home that echoed the see-thru nature of Philip Johnson’s Glass House,” McKeel recalled. “Our clients wanted an open-plan living area that showcased views of both the Hudson Valley and of the spectacular cliff just behind the home’s site. This was the root of our inspiration for the project, which branches out from that two-sided glass living space.”

The choice of windows was crucial in ensuring that the expansive glazing did not compromise comfort conditions within the home. “We chose Marvin windows for this project because they were able to provide large panes of glass that paired well with a full-height sliding door,” McKeel explained. “Marvin windows offer excellent energy performance, which was critical for a central living area with a large proportion of glazing.”

The impact of the windows extends beyond energy efficiency, however. “Our client is an early riser and loves seeing the sunrise from the windows in her bedroom and from the main living space. She also loves the tall ceilings and the 11-foot doors that make the space extend to the outdoors, creating a seamless interior-exterior flow,” McKeel said.

In Tranquil Abiding, the design approach was driven by the clients’ desire for a meditative retreat near their Buddhist temple. McKeel’s design responded with a series of four stone-clad volumes, each housing a different program and connected by corridors that encourage moments of reflection.

Tranquil Abiding. Photo courtesy of Studio MM

“The clients gravitated towards a concept that would pull apart the volumes they required — a main bedroom, living room, guest suite, and meditation space — into distinct pavilions,” McKeel recalled. “The autonomous pavilions are linked together by corridors, creating a juxtaposition of vacant and occupied space and creating meditative pauses between each volume.”

Tranquil Abiding. Photo courtesy of Studio MM

Marvin Ultimate windows again proved essential, allowing McKeel to incorporate large expanses of glass while maintaining thermal comfort. “We’ve used Marvin windows in many of our projects over the years and have built up a great deal of confidence in their products,” she explained. “Our clients met me at our own home and had expressed concerns about feeling cold with that much glass. I had them stand up against the Marvin windows I have in my home, and they quickly realized that they didn’t need to worry about the cold transfer.”

Tranquil Abiding. Photo courtesy of Studio MM

The clients have since embraced the design, appreciating how the glazing fosters a strong connection to nature and makes them feel immersed within the landscape. “The clients love the windows — they’ve noted how well the operable casement windows facilitate natural cross breezes, how the living room feels so much more expansive, and how each room has a distinct viewpoint to the outdoors,” McKeel said. “Each space has a different relationship to sunlight and to the surrounding forest, enabled by these windows.”

Tranquil Abiding. Photo courtesy of Studio MM

These projects reflect Studio MM’s commitment to creating spaces that engage deeply with their environments, while addressing clients’ specific needs. The careful selection of glazing systems played a key role in making these homes as functional as they are beautiful, offering both design flexibility and performance.

For architects seeking to elevate their projects with a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, Marvin Ultimate windows provide a versatile, high-performing solution. Explore how these windows can enhance your next project by visiting Marvin’s website.

Blueprints Printing: The Architect’s Time Machine

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a time machine - to skip ahead into a future when technology has solved all of our problems, or perhaps to go back to a simpler time when we didn’t have to deal with the complications that modern technology brings? However, in the wise words of Archibald, the animated architect: “Architecture is not a final destination in time; it is a journey through life.”  As architects and builders, we are constantly imagining and designing for the future, while attempting to deal with reality as it exists in the present.

Deciding when and how to modernize your business is potentially a make-or-break decision.  We know from working with engineers, architects, and construction professionals, that the move to digital interaction increases efficiency and is a desirable strategic goal.  However, there are also those who are comfortable with hard copy plans and trips to their local reprographer.  No matter where your business falls on the technology continuum, Blueprintsprinting.com is your design/build time machine - transporting you into the technological future without out any new grey hairs.
