Project: Cais des Artes
Architect: Metro Arquitetos and Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Location: Vitoria, Brazil
Prominently located on the waterfront of Vitoria and surrounded by spectacular views of the natural landscape, this sprawling museum complex was designed with the intention of preserving the character of its historic environs. With a 3,000 square-meter exhibition area, and a theater that can seat 1,300 spectators, the city hopes this new institution will draw major artistic showcases, and transform the area into cultural host of national importance. The vast pristine raw-concrete façade floats above the ground on piers, and is broken up by a simple, elegant void that frames views of nearby mountains. Brazil sure does modern concrete architecture right!
